NUCLEAR ELECTRICITY GENERATION
OPERABLE
UNDER CONSTRUCTION †

Sources:

Reactor and electricity data: International Atomic Energy Agency Power Reactor Information System (PRIS); US Energy Information Administration; company data; World Nuclear Association estimates
World Nuclear Association, The Nuclear Fuel Report (September 2017, reference scenario) – for U
65,014 tU = 76,671 t U3O8

Notes:

Operable = Connected to the grid.
Under Construction = First concrete for reactor poured.
Planned = Approvals, funding or commitment in place, mostly expected to be in operation in the 2020s.
Proposed = Specific programme or site proposals; timing very uncertain.

* Gross generation.

** The world total includes Taiwan, where the six operating reactors, with a combined capacity of 4927 MWe, generated a total of 21.6 TWh in 2017 (accounting for 9.3% of Taiwan's total electricity generation).

*** 2016 data.

† Under Construction figures include a number of units where construction is currently suspended: Lungmen 1&2 (Taiwan); Angra 3 (Brazil); and Baltic 1 (Russia).

‡ Khmelnitski 3&4 (Ukraine) are listed as under construction in PRIS. Construction was suspended in 1990 and is yet to restart. In this table the two units are listed as planned.

New plants coming online are largely balanced by old plants being retired. Over 1996-2016, 80 reactors were retired as 96 started operation. The reference scenario in the 2017 edition of The Nuclear Fuel Report (Table 2.4) has 140 reactors closing by 2035, and 224 new ones coming online (figures include 22 Japanese reactors online by 2035).

TWh = terawatt hour (billion kilowatt hours); kWh = kilowatt hour; MWe = megawatt (electrical as distinct from thermal)

Note: This table is routinely updated approximately every two months, and more frequently as required.
