South Africa  - WNA Nuclear Century Outlook

Overview

  • South Africa has two nuclear reactors generating 6% of its electricity.
  • Its first commercial nuclear power reactor began operating in 1984.
  • Government commitment to the future of nuclear energy is strong, however it has reduced its projections for nuclear capacity by 2025 from 25 GWe to 6 GWe, with the first new reactor coming on stream in 2019.
  • A 2010 statement by the Director General at the Ministry of Energy Nelisiwe Magubaneter said that around 7 GWe of new nuclear capacity would be needed between 2020 and 2030. The statement also said that it would not make sense to just build one nuclear power plant, but that a fleet would be required.
