Transport of Radioactive Materials

About 20 million consignments of all sizes containing radioactive materials are routinely transported worldwide annually on public roads, railways and ships. Since 1971 there have been more than 20,000 shipments of used fuel and high-level wastes (over 80,000 tonnes) over many million kilometres.

Japanese Waste and MOX Shipments From Europe

Reprocessing of Japanese used fuel has been undertaken in UK and France under contract with Japanese utilities. Recovered fissile materials are returned to Japan as reactor fuel, notably as mixed oxide (MOX) fuel.
