Webinar - The role of nuclear beyond electricity

World Nuclear Association hosted a webinar that explored the role of nuclear energy to decarbonize sectors beyond electricity. Nuclear energy is the only zero-carbon energy source that produces electricity and heat, thus opening exciting opportunities to decarbonize hard to abate sectors such as industry and heavy transport. Unfortunately, this important potential is currently not considered in any of the mainstream scenarios proposed to achieve net-zero by 2050. This webinar presented two studies that evaluate the important role that nuclear can play beyond the decarbonization of electricity systems.
Canadian Nuclear Association President and Chief Executive Officer John Gorman presented the results of a study on the economic and climate implications of employing small modular reactors (SMRs) in Canada’s high-emitting industrial sectors. TerraPraxis Co-Founder Eric Ingersoll discussed how untapped options for clean hydrogen can put the world back on the pathway to the Paris climate goals.

The world can still meet the Paris goals of 1.5–2°C if sufficient, low-cost, clean hydrogen is produced to replace oil and gas in shipping, aviation and industry, according to a major new TerraPraxis report.
