Fermi Energia joins Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge to support tripling nuclear energy by 2050
Fermi Energia has joined the Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge, strengthening global industry support for the goal of tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The pledge is part of the widening coalition behind tripling nuclear, alongside the government-led Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy, support from major financial institutions, and the Large Energy Users Pledge.
Fermi Energia has become a new signatory to the Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge, reinforcing growing momentum across the nuclear sector to help deliver the goal of at least tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
Fermi Energia is an Estonian nuclear energy company developing the Baltic region's first small modular reactor programme. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Tallinn, the company is preparing to deploy a two-unit BWRX-300 plant in Estonia to deliver clean, dispatchable, and affordable electricity in support of Estonia's energy security and climate objectives. Fermi Energia works closely with leading international partners across technology, engineering, and finance to bring new nuclear capacity to the Baltic and Nordic market by the mid-2030s.
Commenting on the announcement, Kalev Kallemets, CEO of Fermi Energia, said:
“Tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050 is an industrial necessity if Europe is to meet its climate goals while securing affordable, dispatchable power. Estonia's BWRX-300 programme is Fermi Energia's concrete contribution, and we are proud to stand with the global industry committing to deliver it.”
“We are pleased to welcome Fermi Energia to the Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge. As Estonia advances as a new nuclear country, Fermi Energia’s commitment reflects the growing momentum behind nuclear as the cornerstone of energy systems fit to deliver net zero, energy security and energy access.” said Dr Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General, World Nuclear Association
The Industry Pledge sits within a broader, cross-sector effort to turn global ambition into implementation. At COP28, governments launched the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy, committing to work together towards tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050. In parallel, major financial institutions have publicly expressed support for tripling nuclear energy and improving access to financing. 7 Large energy users have also pledged support for tripling nuclear capacity by 2050, recognising nuclear’s role in firm, secure clean energy supply and explicitly supporting the government Declaration.
