Togo endorses global declaration to triple nuclear energy by 2050

Updated Friday, 9 October 2026

Togo has joined the growing international coalition of the ambitious supporting the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy by 2050, reinforcing the role on nuclear power in achieving energy security, economic development and climate goals. HE Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, President of the Council of the Republic of Togo, made this announcement during his opening keynote speech at World Nuclear Symposium 2026.

Launched at COP28 in Dubai, the declaration sets out a shared ambition for global nuclear capacity to at least triple by 2050, in support of decarbonisation and the Paris Agreement goals.

Togo's endorsement, announced at World Nuclear Symposium 2026 in London, brings the number of countries backing the declaration to 39, as momentum behind nuclear energy continues to grow worldwide.

The full declaration and list of supporting countries can be found here.

Togo's endorsement was announced by HE Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, President of the Council of the Republic of Togo, during his opening keynote at Symposium. He said Togo sees nuclear science and technology "as part of its broader development and energy security agenda."

With more than 600 million people across Africa still lacking access to electricity, nuclear energy can provide the reliable, around-the-clock power needed to support economic growth. By endorsing the declaration, Togo joins governments, financial institutions and industry in supporting increased nuclear capacity worldwide.

Dr Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of World Nuclear Association, welcomed Togo to the coalition of the ambitious, describing it as a country positioning itself "at the vanguard of the energy transition." Highlighting that Togo will host the next Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA) in Lomé from 1–3 June 2027, Sama said,:

“I am looking forward to the new momentum in West Africa as Togo takes up the mantle to host the next Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, and to share this vision for continental collaboration, regulatory excellence and deployment of clean energy infrastructure including nuclear.”
