25 Years of World Nuclear Association: From Ambition to Action

Updated Tuesday, 3 March 2026

In 2026, World Nuclear Association marks 25 years under its current name. Yet our story began much earlier.

Founded in 1976 as the Uranium Institute, the organisation was created to bring greater transparency, dialogue and cooperation to the global nuclear fuel market. Over time, its scope expanded alongside the industry itself. In 2001, it was renamed and relaunched as the World Nuclear Association to reflect a broader mission representing the full civil nuclear value chain.

As we celebrate 25 years as World Nuclear Association in 2026, we also recognise that we have been convening, informing and supporting the industry for 50 years.

A quarter century under our current name. Five decades at the centre of the global nuclear conversation. Above all, 50 years of turning ambition into action.

This anniversary is both a time to reflect, and a time to signal clearly that as an industry the time for action is now.

Part I: From Ambition to Action in a Changing Global Landscape

The ambition to strengthen global collaboration in nuclear energy did not begin in 2001.

In 1976, the first World Nuclear Symposium was held in London under the Uranium Institute. Nearly 300 participants from 22 countries gathered to discuss uranium supply, demand and fuel cycle fundamentals. The goal was clear: to create a trusted forum for dialogue in a rapidly evolving sector.

Over the following decades, the Symposium became a witness to the defining moments of the industry. It continued through the aftermath of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. It adapted to shifting market conditions, new reactor technologies, and growing international cooperation. It evolved from a fuel market focused meeting into a global platform addressing the full value chain of civil nuclear energy.

In 2001, the World Nuclear Association was formally established, transforming the Uranium Institute into a modern international trade body representing the entire industry. Industry ambition broadened. Nuclear energy needed a unified global voice. It required authoritative data, clear policy engagement, and structured cooperation between established and emerging nuclear nations.

Over the past 25 years, that ambitious mission has driven World Nuclear Association.

The Association has strengthened industry alignment on safety and best practice. It has elevated nuclear energy within international climate and sustainability discussions. It has supported new entrant countries as they build programmes responsibly. It has expanded its research, reporting and convening power, making its publications and events trusted reference points across governments, finance institutions and the private sector.

World Nuclear Symposium has grown alongside it. What began as a technical gathering is now the premier global forum for civil nuclear leadership. Each year, it brings together executives, policymakers, regulators, investors and technology developers to shape the direction of the industry.

From early coordination in fuel markets to global leadership in clean energy advocacy, this is what ambition into action looks like in practice.

Part II: From Ambition to Action at World Nuclear Symposium 2026

This September, the industry will gather in London for World Nuclear Symposium 2026 under the banner of “From Ambition to Action”.

The theme reflects the defining characteristic of nuclear progress: delivery.

As the Association marks its 25th anniversary, the focus will not only be on institutional milestones, but on the individuals whose work has made sustained progress possible.

25 Everyday Heroes of Nuclear

To honour this milestone, World Nuclear Association plans to present a special anniversary exhibition titled 25 Everyday Heroes of Nuclear.

This exhibition will recognise individuals whose dedication, expertise and professionalism have helped move the industry forward. They may be engineers delivering complex infrastructure. Analysts shaping policy frameworks. Communicators strengthening public understanding. Operators upholding the highest safety standards. Researchers, financiers, educators and project managers who have created tangible impact through consistent effort.

The Heroes of Nuclear may not all have been around for 25 years - but their contributions will have had a significant impact

Each selected hero will be featured through a high resolution black and white portrait, for display at the World Nuclear Symposium. Alongside the portrait will be a summary outlining what they have delivered and how their work has advanced the sector.

Because behind every regulatory reform, construction milestone, safety improvement and strategic breakthrough are people.

Call for Nominations

We invite our members to nominate people from their workforce who have delivered meaningful outcomes in their roles. We are keen to represent diverse geographies and disciplines and celebrate people who embody the commitment and professionalism that underpin the industry’s progress.
