Tripling Nuclear Energy highlighted at World Utilities Congress 2025

Updated Monday, 9 June 2025

World Utilities Congress 2025, held in Abu Dhabi from 27–29 May, serves as a premier global platform for advancing the transformation of the utilities sector. The event brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from around the world to showcase technologies, forge strategic partnerships, and explore investment opportunities aimed at building a sustainable and inclusive energy future.

Our Director General, Dr Sama Bilbao y León participated in the programme, speaking on day 2 of the Strategic Conference, in the Global Leadership Panel “Realising the ambition: tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050”. The panel explored how tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050 can become a reality through innovative investments, streamlined regulations, and enhanced public confidence. Ahead of the event Sama provided a thought leadership piece outlining how to action the tripling goal, and energize the future now. Sama was interviewed by Energy Connects Podcast, again sharing a clear vision to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050.

Elsewhere, nuclear energy played a significant role in the Congress, particularly through the activities of our members. A key highlight was the partnership agreement signed between ENEC and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy to explore the international deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. ENEC emphasized that nuclear energy is essential for meeting the growing demand for reliable, dispatchable, and sustainable power, especially for sectors like AI and data centres.
