World Nuclear Association partners with The University of the West Indies to Support STEM Education in Jamaica

Updated Friday, 12 September 2025

World Nuclear Association (WNA) and The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) formalized a strategic partnership on April 29, 2025.

Through this collaboration, the Association has donated copies of one of its most distinguished literary publications, Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century by Ian Hore-Lacy, to selected secondary schools across Jamaica – with Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century now integrated into the secondary school curriculum.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment to enhancing nuclear literacy and stimulating greater interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among high school students.

This partnership comes at a timely moment, as nuclear education in Jamaica is focused on research and training, with increasing emphasis on preparing future talent for the nuclear sector and cultivating a deeper understanding of nuclear science from an earlier stage of education.

The University of the West Indies continues to play a central role in advancing nuclear education in the region, and this partnership highlights the importance of cross-collaboration between academia and industry in shaping an informed foundation for the future of nuclear energy. As for World Nuclear Association, this initiative underscores its mission to promote knowledge and contribute meaningfully to nuclear education.
