Nuclear Industry Statement calls for continued support from ministers at G7 Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment

Representatives of the nuclear industry presented an industry statement to H.E. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Italy, at an event held alongside the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Turin, Italy.  

The statement is a consolidated declaration, by the international nuclear energy associations, calling for the continued support of the G7 countries for nuclear energy, including on efforts to secure necessary financing avenues for new nuclear projects. 

The associations call upon G7 governments to embrace nuclear deployment as a strategic priority, by maximizing use of existing nuclear power plants and setting clear plans for further deployment that would fulfil the targets they set at COP28, to triple global nuclear capacity. Taking decisive action will demonstrate their commitment to nuclear energy, giving clear signals to markets and investors.  

Speaking from the event, World Nuclear Association Director General Dr Sama Bilbao y Leon, said: “I congratulate the Italian government for its leadership of the G7 meetings this year, and for their recognition of nuclear’s role to support climate change mitigation and deep decarbonization of the entire economy. As an industry we also recognise the role of Italian companies, and indeed of companies from all G7 countries, supporting an acceleration in nuclear development and deployment globally.”  

The statement was presented by AIN (Associazione Italiana Nucleare), CNA (Canada Nuclear Association), Gifen (Groupement des Industriels Français de l’Energie Nucléaire), JAIF (Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc.), NEI (Nuclear Energy Institute), NIA (Nuclear Industry Association), nucleareurope, and World Nuclear Association, in a ceremonial signing, during a workshop held under the auspices of Planet Week, G7 Italy, the Italian Ministry for Environment and Energy Security, and Connect4Climate.
