Statement from World Nuclear Association on the situation in Iran

Updated Friday, 10 April 2026

Issued Friday 10 April 2026

World Nuclear Association welcomes the announcement by Iran and the United States of a two-week ceasefire and continues to monitor the situation at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and other nuclear power plants in the region.

We recognize the loss of life and the suffering caused by the recent conflict, and our thoughts are with those affected. In this context, the Association is particularly concerned by reports of incidents in the vicinity of the Bushehr site in recent weeks, including the death of a worker, and is following the situation carefully.

We acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of personnel at civilian nuclear facilities across the region, who continue to carry out their duties under extremely difficult circumstances. Designed with multiple robust layers of safety and security, and the commitment of skilled workers, civilian nuclear plants in the region continue to operate safely and provide reliable electricity for essential services.

It is vital that the rules protecting all energy infrastructure — and nuclear power plants in particular — are clearly restated and respected, especially during times of conflict. We appreciate the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in highlighting these incidents and reminding all parties of their obligations under international law.

World Nuclear Association supports international efforts to protect civilian nuclear facilities and the people who work at them. The Association will continue to work closely with the IAEA and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) to promote restraint and the protection of vital energy infrastructure during this period.
