World Nuclear Association submission to CSIRO public consultation on GenCost: cost of building Australia’s future electricity needs
Updated Thursday, 13 February 2025
World Nuclear Association has responded to the GenCost 2024-25 Consultation draft published by Australia's national science agency, CSIRO. The annual GenCost reports aim to provide an assessment of the cost of different electricity generation options for Australia. In our opinion there are key failings in the report, particularly in its assessment of nuclear energy. Our response addresses the following topics:
- Continued use of LCOE
- Assumptions: capacity factors
- Assumptions: project lifetime
- Capital cost estimates
- Learning rates
- Backup requirements
- Duration of construction
We expand upon these points within the full submission.
