Egypt has a strategy to diversify the energy mix, including through the use of renewable and nuclear energies.194
New capacity
Large-scale reactors
Four VVER-1200 reactors are under construction at El-Dabaa, with the first unit planned to be online in 2028.195 An initial agreement for the project – the first commercial nuclear power plant in the country – was signed in 2015. Construction of unit 1 began in July 2022, unit 2 in November 2022, unit 3 in May 2023 and unit 4 in January 2024. Egypt's aim is for 9% of electricity to be generated by nuclear by 2030, which would be achieved by the commercial operation of the first two units by that time, directly displacing oil and gas.196
