Pakistan has six Chinese-supplied operating reactors at the Chashma and Karachi plants with a total net capacity of 3262 MWe.

Expansion of nuclear power capacity has long been a central element of Pakistan's energy policy to meet the rapidly increasing power demand and achieve emissions reduction targets. Pakistan’s Nuclear Energy Vision 2050, published in 2022, envisions nuclear generation capacity reaching 40,000 MWe by 2050.139

In June 2023, Pakistan agreed a $4.8 billion deal with China to provide an HPR1000 reactor as unit 5 of the Chashma plant. Construction began at the end of 2024.
