Working Groups: Where Members Shape the Future of Nuclear Energy

Updated Tuesday, 20 January 2026

World Nuclear Association’s Working Groups are the main way members actively take part in the Association’s work. They provide a practical and influential forum for organisations to contribute ideas, share experience and help shape how the nuclear industry responds to major challenges and opportunities.

Each Working Group brings together professionals from across the global nuclear sector, including utilities, suppliers, technology developers and service providers. These are member-only forums where discussions move beyond information sharing. Members help inform the Association’s analysis, positions and engagement with international organisations such as the IAEA, IEA, World Bank, OECD-NEA and United Nations bodies.

For members, the benefits are clear. Working Groups provide opportunities to build relationships with peers facing similar technical, business and policy issues. They offer access to timely, in-depth insight that goes beyond public reporting, drawing on member experience, shared data and direct interaction with policymakers and regulators. Most importantly, they give members a real opportunity to influence outcomes by contributing their organisation’s perspective to agreed industry views.

Each Working Group is led by an industry chair and supported by a Board mentor and the Association’s Secretariat. This ensures discussions remain member-driven while staying aligned with the Association’s strategic priorities. All member companies can nominate staff to participate, and all members have access to Working Group reports, presentations and outputs through the members’ website.

In 2025, Working Groups delivered a wide range of practical outcomes across the nuclear value chain. Members collaborated on topics including reactor licensing, sustainability and ESG, security, radiological protection, supply chains and used fuel management. This work helped develop practical tools, clarify industry positions and improve coordination with international institutions and policymakers

Together, these activities show the value of structured collaboration. Working Groups help members share lessons learned, anticipate regulatory and operational change, and contribute to clear, evidence-based industry perspectives. Rather than producing standalone market forecasts, they focus on practical discussion, shared understanding and creating the conditions needed for safe, secure and scalable nuclear deployment.

The January 2026 Working Group meetings, held on 13 - 14 January at IET Savoy Place in London, gave members the opportunity to review progress, agree priorities for the year ahead and engage directly with peers from around the world. Read the highlights here.

The next Working Group meetings will take place on 13 - 14 April and 7 - 9 September in London, ahead of the World Nuclear Symposium. To find out how to get involved, please contact members@world-nuclear.org

For organisations looking to become more engaged in the global nuclear community, Working Groups offer a clear and practical way to participate, contribute and help shape the future direction of the industry.
